Privacy Statement

Last updated

Automatic is a desktop application, published by Velvet Tiger, that manages AI agent configuration locally on your machine. Your privacy is important to us. This statement explains what data the Automatic website (tryautomatic.app) and the Automatic desktop application collect, how that data is used, and how you can control it.

The Automatic website

The website is a static site. It has no user accounts, no forms, and no comment system, and it does not set cookies. We do not run analytics or advertising trackers on it.

Your browser does make a small number of requests to third parties when you visit:

  • Google Fonts. The site loads the Inter and Fira Code typefaces from Google Fonts. Google receives your IP address and browser details as part of that request, under Google's privacy policy.
  • GitHub. The download buttons ask the GitHub API for the latest release of Automatic, so that they can link to the right installer for your operating system. GitHub receives your IP address as part of that request, under GitHub's privacy statement. Following a download link takes you to GitHub, which then applies its own policies.

Like most websites, requests to tryautomatic.app are served by a hosting provider, which may keep standard server logs such as IP address, requested page, and browser user agent. We do not use these logs to identify individual visitors.

The /install page opens the Automatic desktop application through an automatic:// link. The repository you choose to install is handled by the application on your machine and is not sent to us.

Local-first architecture in the desktop application

All project configuration, skills, rules, templates, and MCP server settings are stored locally on your machine. Automatic does not upload your project files, source code, or agent configurations to any external server. Data is stored across four locations:

  • ~/.agents/ — the global library of skills, rules, templates, MCP server configs, and project registrations
  • ~/.automatic/ — application settings, credentials, and internal state
  • <project>/.automatic.json — per-project configuration you can commit with your code
  • <project>/.automatic/ — per-project state and files synced into each project directory

Analytics

Automatic may collect anonymous usage analytics, such as which features are used and how often, to help us improve the application. Analytics collection is opt-in and can be enabled or disabled at any time in Settings > Support.

When enabled, analytics data is sent to Amplitude. This data does not include your source code, file contents, project names, or any personally identifiable information beyond an anonymous user identifier.

Network requests

The desktop application may make network requests for the following purposes:

  • Checking for application updates
  • Browsing the Skill Store, Discover Templates, and Discover MCP Servers
  • Sending anonymous analytics, when you have opted in
  • OAuth authentication for credential storage

No data is sent unless you initiate one of these actions or have opted in to analytics.

Credentials and API keys

API keys and credentials you configure are stored locally using your operating system's secure credential storage, for example the macOS Keychain. Automatic does not transmit your API keys to any third party. Keys are only used to authenticate with the services you configure.

Third-party services

When you connect MCP servers or AI providers, those services have their own privacy policies. Automatic facilitates the connection but does not control how those services handle your data. We recommend that you review the privacy policies of any third-party services you connect.

Data deletion

Because the desktop application stores its data locally, you can delete it at any time by removing the ~/.agents/ and ~/.automatic/ directories, or by using the Erase All Data option in Settings. Per-project data in .automatic.json files and .automatic/ directories within your projects can be removed individually. Uninstalling Automatic removes the application but does not automatically delete your configuration data.

Changes to this statement

We may update this statement as Automatic changes. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised.
